Vegan and Veggie Food on the Go

You’ve pulled in for fuel, you’re hungry and you don’t eat meat.

So begins the familiar hunt along the shelves. A cheese sandwich if you’re lucky. A bag of crisps if you’re not. And somewhere nearby, the smell of bacon reminding you exactly what you’re not having.

It doesn’t have to go that way. Whether you’re vegan, vegetarian or just having a meat-free day, there’s more at Bakery79 than you might expect. Here’s what to look for, from the first stop of the morning to the last one before home.

Vegan, vegetarian or meat-free: what’s the difference?

Quick one before we get to the food, because the words matter when you’re the one eating it.

Vegan means no animal products at all. No meat, no fish, no dairy, no eggs.

Vegetarian means no meat or fish, but things like cheese, milk and eggs can still be in there.

Meat-free is the broader one. It simply means there’s no meat in it, which covers both of the above and plenty of people who just fancy a break from bacon.

Throughout this guide, we’ve only called something vegan or vegetarian where that’s what it is. Where we say plant-based or meat-free, that’s exactly what we mean. And every product has its full ingredients list on our website if you want to check for yourself.

Can you get a meat-free breakfast on the road?

Early start. Long drive ahead. Bacon baps everywhere you turn.

Our Veggie Sausage Baguette is made with plant-based sausages in a soft white baguette. It’s a proper savoury breakfast, the kind that gets you well past the first services without thinking about food again. If you’d rather something a bit smaller, the Veggie Sausage Bap does the same job in a soft bap.

Properly hungry? The Veggie Breakfast Bowl brings plant-based sausages, fluffy omelette, baked beans and golden potato crunchies together in one pot. It contains egg and milk, so it’s one for vegetarians rather than vegans.

Add a coffee and breakfast is sorted before the tank’s even full. You’ll find the rest of the morning line-up on our full breakfast menu, and there are more ideas for a meat-free morning in our back-to-work breakfast guide.

What’s vegan at Bakery79?

We’ll be straight with you: our vegan range isn’t huge yet. But the two things on it are worth knowing about.

The Vegan Sausage Roll is the one to look for. A seasoned plant-based filling with onions and herbs, wrapped in crisp golden pastry. Warm, flaky and exactly what a cold car park calls for. It’s also the kind of thing you can eat standing next to the car without needing a plate, a fork or a plan.

For something sweet, the Jammy D Doughnut is suitable for vegans too. A soft doughnut, a fruit jam filling and a light sugar coating. A classic for a reason, and a very good reason to stop for coffee on the way back.

Small range. Good picks.

What about a veggie lunch?

By lunchtime, you want something that feels like an actual meal, not a compromise you made at a till.

A slice of Veg Supreme Pizza does that nicely. Mixed peppers, red onion and sweetcorn over tomato sauce, mozzarella and cheddar. Hot, filling and on its way with you in a couple of minutes.

If you’d rather something cold that still counts as lunch, the Feta & Tomato Pasta Pot is pasta in a herby tomato sauce with creamy Greek feta and fresh spinach. It travels well, it’s easy to eat in the car park and it doesn’t leave you wondering where lunch went an hour later.

And when the weather’s turned, a Cheese & Onion Slice is hard to argue with. Flaky pastry, a creamy cheese sauce and sweet onions. Warm hands, happy stomach.

Browse the rest of our savouries, or if you’re after something on the lighter side, take a look at our guide to lighter options.

Something to keep you going between stops

Not every stop needs to be a meal. Sometimes it’s mid-afternoon, there’s an hour left to drive and you just need something to pick at.

Our Halloumi Bites are crisp on the outside, soft and salty in the middle, and ideal for eating one at a time while you work out how much further it really is.

If you’d prefer something fresher, the Fruit Pot is crisp red apple and sweet grapes, nothing more complicated than that. And on a cold morning, a pot of PORiJ is creamy oat porridge with seeds, in Vanilla, Maple Syrup or Apple & Cinnamon. Warm, filling and easy to hold in one hand.

How do I check ingredients and allergens?

Every product on our menu has its own page with the full ingredients list, allergens and nutrition information, so you can check exactly what’s in something before you order.

If you’re vegan, have an allergy or just like to know what you’re eating, it’s worth a quick look. And if you’re not sure about anything, ask the team in store. They’ll happily help.
